If you want to do something well, do it every day. I once heard someone say that if you want to know your true life's purpose, you should remember what you loved to do when you were ten. When I was a gawky, awkward ten year old sporting a homemade dress, knee socks with tennis shoes and braids, I was reading like there was no tomorrow (there was) like it was the newest thing since sliced bread (it wasn't) and until the cows came home (no, they never did). Call me a bookworm, a nerd, an introverted, shy little mountain girl who loved Jesus and horses but not Elvis (too sinful) reading and writing were my ultimate means of escape. A few years later I began a love-affair with my camera, cheating on my books but not leaving them entirely. The story ends happily, as the three of us have become a blissful love triangle, co-existing pleasantly as one of the few functioning polygamous relationships do. We help, support and share with each other. Not to say there isn't the occasional power struggle. But we always end up in bed together, cuddling happily. Picture's stunning beauty is confident enough to shine in the face of Word's deeply quiet intelligence. I am photographer, writer and artist, among many other things. And they are just as much me. My head swims with the fishes of visions and stories, and finally I have the determination to be as true to myself as I can. I am done making excuses for not doing what it is I truly love. I have written three novels in ninety days and am at last going to edit at least one of them till it's ready to make its way to the big wide world of publishing. Daunting though it may be, I know it's entirely possible. I take photographs of whatever inspires me at the moment. I have a recurrent dream/vision of opening a studio for women of all sizes, ages and beliefs. For those who want nothing more than to be in a safe environment with a wildly creative woman whose goal is to help each one relax, have fun and learn to appreciate her own unique beauty. There is a mini-fridge stocked with champagne and chocolate, a killer sound system, an antique red velvet couch and many outfits to choose from. In the meantime my daily goal is to make people laugh and feel good about themselves and to do my best to notice all the seemingly insignificant beauties and pleasures that abound all around us. We are, after all, mirrors of each other. So if the photographs and words that I capture and release to the world are beautiful and real enough to inspire, even if they're sometimes dark and scary, then I guess I'm doing my job. Words are my manna and photographs my dessert, just like they were when I was ten. I guess "someone" was right. Visit Whitney’s Blog. Privacy Policy. |
